10:00 a.m. Summer Service
During the summer 10:00 AM services, a one room, all ages, church school class is held. During the service in the sanctuary, the children are invited to attend the church school class, which is held downstairs in St. Andrews Hall (in the blue classroom). The children are welcomed by a church school teacher and assistant. The children are supported in their growth in faith during the summer months through reading the Bible, storytelling, praying, singing, and participating in crafts, based on the same Seasons of the Spirit church school teaching material that is used during the rest of the year.
On Sundays, worship service begins with a time for the whole church family and includes hymns, the Lord’s Prayer, a psalm that we read together responsively, and a special story by the Minister for the children. Infants, children and teens to grade 10 are then invited to participate in Church School classes, where they are guided by caring teachers and assistants.
After leaving the sanctuary together, their time begins with a general assembly in Grant Hall, after which they separate into six age appropriate classes. Infants are cared for in the nursery by our certified child care provider provided through Andrew Fleck Child Care Services. A pager system is in place so parents can be reached during the service if needed. St. Andrew’s is a Leading With Care congregation and follows the requirements outlined by the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Kids' Church is a time of worship specifically for preschoolers and their families that runs at the same time as the older kids' group. A time in the sanctuary together, followed by a craft and activity upstairs in Grant Hall.
For older kids, we have a program for kids in Grades 1-6, that runs in St. Andrew's Hall on the last Saturday of every month alongside the preschoolers' worship program. This program is helping children minister to the community in tangible ways.
All families will enjoy a meal together after Kids' Church.
Sunday Morning Church School
Children age 4-5 take part in a Young Children and Worship program, based on the Montessori philosophy and developed by Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman. Children are encouraged to experience worship in their own way and to prepare for joining congregational worship when they are older. More on the Children and Worship program can be found in this online resource from the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
The older children are following a program called Seasons of the Spirit, based on the church calendar. Teachers use age-appropriate stories and activities to encourage children to live out “the hope that is within them.” The curriculum focuses on exploring the meaning and mystery of the Bible and applying these truths to a contemporary, global world.
Nursery for infants
St. Andrew’s Church has a professionally supervised nursery during its Sunday morning services for infants and toddlers up to the age of two. The nursery service is provided by the Andrew Fleck Child Care Service and a volunteer member of the congregation. Parents using the nursery service are required to sign their child into the nursery and are given a pager so that they can be reached if necessary. Please speak with our nursery coordinator email@example.com if you would like to assist with the nursery.
Children and Communion
As a congregation, we recognize children as an important part of St. Andrew's worshipping community. We enthusiastically welcome children to the table through participation in educational opportunities and, when they are ready, participation in the sacrament itself. To help you understand communion, and to help you prepare your child to receive communion, this downloadable booklet may be helpful.
