church school
The 11:00 a.m. worship service begins with a time for the whole church family and includes hymns, the Lord's Prayer, a psalm that we read together responsively, and a special story by the Minister for the children.
Infants, children and teens to grade 10 are then invited to participate in Church School classes, where they are guided by caring teachers and assistants.
After leaving the sanctuary together, their time begins with a general assembly in Grant Hall, after which they separate into six age appropriate classes. Infants are cared for in the nursery by our certified child care provider provided through Andrew Fleck Child Care Services. A pager system is in place so parents can be reached during the service if needed. St. Andrew's is a Leading With Care congregation and follows the requirements outlined by the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Children age 2-3 take part in a Young Children and Worship program, based on the Montessori philosphy and developed by Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman. Children are encouraged to experience worship in their own way and to prepare for joining congregational worship when they are older. More on the Children and Worship program can be found in this online resource from the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
The older children are following a program called Seasons of the Spirit, based on the church calendar. Teachers use age-appropriate stories and activities to encourage children to live out "the hope that is within them." The curriculum focuses on exploring the meaning and mystery of the Bible and applying these truths to a contemporary, global world.
