On Sundays, the 11:00 a.m. worship service begins with a time for the whole church family and includes hymns, the Lord’s Prayer, a psalm that we read together responsively, and a special story by the Minister for the children. Infants, children and teens to grade 10 are then invited to participate in Church School classes, where they are guided by caring teachers and assistants.
After leaving the sanctuary together, their time begins with a general assembly in Grant Hall, after which they separate into six age appropriate classes. Infants are cared for in the nursery by our certified child care provider provided through Andrew Fleck Child Care Services. A pager system is in place so parents can be reached during the service if needed. St. Andrew’s is a Leading With Care congregation and follows the requirements outlined by the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Sunday Morning Church School
Children age 2-3 take part in a Young Children and Worship program, based on the Montessori philosophy and developed by Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman. Children are encouraged to experience worship in their own way and to prepare for joining congregational worship when they are older. More on the Children and Worship program can be found in this online resource from the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
The older children are following a program called Seasons of the Spirit, based on the church calendar. Teachers use age-appropriate stories and activities to encourage children to live out “the hope that is within them.” The curriculum focuses on exploring the meaning and mystery of the Bible and applying these truths to a contemporary, global world.
All preschoolers and their families are invited to join us. The theme this month is Sing a New Song. We will start in St. Andrew’s Hall with a simple craft, then to the sanctuary carpet for short worship and conclude with a time of fellowship over a potluck supper . For information please contact Huda, 613 869-9042 hk@standrewsottawa.ca
Immediately after the combined 10 a.m. service, we will gather in St. Andrew’s Plaza. Hamburgers and hot dogs and ice cream will be provided – please bring a salad to share. There will also be games!
For kids 8+, we’re practising each Sunday at 10am with Tracey Stabback, our professional choir leader. We’ll sing occasionally during the Sunday service, and do a big concert at Christmas and Easter. Register online for the Children’s Choir or speak with Huda if interested.
Kids’ Church
Selected Saturday afternoons throughout the year, a time of worship and activities for children 6 and under, with their siblings, parents and grandparents. The children gather on the floor in the sanctuary for a special worship time together with the Minister and their families. Afterward, there’s a special craft time and a simple meal together in St. Andrew’s Hall. A time for growth, friendship and learning for children and their families.
